Where will I find a rainbow to tell me
whether I can have my wish back?
Why is the sky so quiet?
Because all the clouds are with me now.
Do you have a mask for me?
If I open up, my thoughts will overflow and they won’t come true.
Perhaps time is an antidote
or a poison that I am taking
How can I sleep without seeing your smile?
Your image is so near yet so far, out of my embrace
The sun still rotates without the earth
I can still go on without reason
I know it is easy for you to leave
You said over-reliance is our obstable
Even if I must let go, can I at least keep the love to myself?
Just treat it as my late realization

Cyndi Wang regularly comes out with new albums - in fact, her last one, Magic Cyndi came out in April. So here we go again - Cyndi dons an aviator’s costume (man, the Taiwanese artists are really into costumes… First secret agents, then cowboys, now this) for the new album Fly! Cyndi coming out on November 30. Of course, some would argue that because her songs are so generic, she can afford to come out with new albums every few months. But whatever, I’ll reserve judgment until the 30th.

Hello, 大家好! This is my first post here… But don’t be too alarmed. As for who I am: I am 18/M/NYC and available! (editor’s note: This guy’s desperate!) I also don’t understand Mandarin particularly well nor am I particularly literate in Chinese, so forgive me if I butcher anything. But the real reason for this post is a review of Guang Liang’s new album,

Most of the songs in the album on the whole don’t really deviate much from his older work. None of the songs are particularly memorable: I just listened to the entire album three times, and would not be able to hum the melody of any of them, so those of you looking for another 童話, you’re not likely to find one here. On the other hand, most of the songs retain the sort of sappy sentimentalism of his old songs, so if you enjoy that sort of stuff, which I definitely do, you can’t really go too wrong with this album.

Our favorite Malaysian Chinese singer is back to give the awesome year 2007 a final blast. Her last album ‘Kissing the Future of Love’ toyed with the bitter sweetness of adolescent love and with classics like ‘Qinqin’ 親親 (kiss kiss) and ‘Xiao Shou La Da Shou’ 小手拉大手 (Little hand holding big hands), it was arguably her best album to date. Now, Fish’s brand new J’Adore is a similar narrative of love with her typical ballads galore. But instead of doting on adolescent crushes, the heroine of J’Adore leads us through a different journey of introspection, with a tinge of melancholy.

(The Rainbow’s Smile) is a song from the popular drama 微笑pasta, or “Smiling Pasta”. 微笑Pasta, which translates into “smiling pasta” (yes that is pasta in English) tells the story of a young girl (played by Cyndi Wang) who coincidentally meets 何群 (He Qun), a super famous and super popular singer. Try as he might,何群 (He Qun), played by 張東梁 (Nicholas Teo) from Malaysia, cannot get rid of Cyndi’s character, 成曉詩 (Cheng Xiao Shi). From playfully texting him from across the room in class to speaking out against the paparazzi, she is constantly at his side. (He Qun) learn to live with the past and make up with his rebellious younger brother. At the same time, 何群 (He Qun) helps his girlfriend deal with the problems that come from dating a national superstar and supports her loving family, which runs the Italian (yes, in Taiwan) restaurant微笑 pasta. The restaurant lends its name to the drama and it is indeed a good name; the entire drama is very happy go lucky. 微笑pasta aired during the summer of 2006 and had very very high ratings, especially considering the fact that it aired concurrently with the highly anticipated drama “The Hospital” (featuring F4’s Jerry Yan) in Taiwan. (The Rainbow’s Smile) is also very happy go lucky; Cyndi’s voice is good for a song that can cheer you up on a day that you’re feeling down. I must admit, as an American born Chinese, when I first listened to this song, I was a little put off by the parts of it that were in English. After hearing it several times though, I can think of no better words for it than fun and charming. So give it a couple of listens (it’s on the short side too).

Recently released, this song was sung by JJ Lin (林俊傑) for a S-POP (Singaporean pop) contest. In reality, which is S-Pop? I don’t think such a thing can exist. Even though we have many talented Malaysian singers who sing in Chinese (Gary Cao, Guang Liang, Fish Leong, Nicholas Teo, among many others), we don’t call it M-Pop… Perhaps I’m an advocate of C-Pop without borders - without discriminating as to which country it’s from.

Other than that, I can’t say there is anything blisteringly special about the song. Listen and see for yourself!

With just less than two months remaining in the year 2007, the flurry of new albums does not cease. Next up is 梁静茹, or Fish Leong, with her upcoming album - 崇拜, translated in this case as adore (it could also mean worship). It seems that this album is highly French-influenced, as the official name is j’Adore, and the second track is “Ces’t la vie.”

Check it out! The music video that’s been released to the public is only a 2-minute excerpt, take note of that.

Well, after so much waiting, it’s finally here! 我很忙/On The Run - perhaps an album that had many worried and other ecstatic. After listening to it for a couple of days (after all, it was leaked on Halloween 2007), I’d say that in reality there wasn’t that much to be worried about, and there’s certainly a lot to be happy for.

The album certainly showcases Jay Chou’s versatility well. Arguably one of his greatest abilities is to perform in a wide variety on genres and styles, and it is definitely reflected in “On The Run”. From the country/folk of 牛仔很忙 (Cowboy on the Run) to the R&B of 扯 (Tear), there’s a lot to consider. In such a way, people may like or dislike Jay Chou, but no one’s going to call him boring.
