Review

In this day and age, talent is scouted from a young age, and we are seeing more and more cases of young superstars. For those counting, add this next artiste to your ever-growing list. They’re not one, but two girls from Singapore, and as their album name suggests, they’re only 16 this year. Bai Weiling and Bai Weifang (Miko and Yumi) (白2, get it?) were spotted by talent scouts at a young age, and dropped out of school at 14 to pursue their career in dance and music. Whereas it is unfortunate that they have not even finished middle school education, the future seems to still shine brightly for these up and coming starlets.  They’ve been in countries like China, Japan and Taiwan learning from various renowned dance choreographers, and have now come up with their first album, 16未成年, or Minor at 16.

Review

Utada Hikaru is no stranger to anyone who listens to Japanese music, and she recently released her newest album Heart Station in March. This album is the fifth and latest consecutive number 1 album, and follows the success of her previous album Ultra Blue. It currently ranks as the fourth highest selling album of 2008, and also the highest selling album by a female artist in 2008. Prior to the release of the album, she released the single Flavor of Life, which became an immediate hit with fans. One certainly hoped her next album would be just as well-received as the single, and she has not disappointed.

Review

With the introduction of a new band, there always comes forth an abundance of promotional literature attempting to tout the band’s “new” styles, direction, and spirit. While most of the recent ones are pop-oriented (Fahrenheit/飛輪海, Lollipop/棒棒堂, among numerous others), this time the new group on the block is Y2J, perhaps better known by their Chinese name 神木與瞳. The name 神木與瞳 comes from a combination of nicknames of the two - Lai Ming-wei‘s aboriginal nickname and Huang Mei-zhen’s nick of 小瞳.

One more compilation album, this time from Nan Quan Mama (南拳媽媽). It’s also their first compilation album since their debut four years ago, and it includes all their most notable hits since then, over two CDs in all. Of course, that’s not what everyone is interested in, is it? No, I’m sure most people will purchase the album solely for the new songs, of which there are four: Goodbye, Childhood (再見小時候), You’re Not Like Her (妳不像她), Rainy Day (下雨天), Tearful Cosmetics (淚妝).

It appears to be the trend for artists who released a new studio album last year to release a compilation album this year, with a couple of new songs and a reworked playlist of oldies. Wilber Pan (潘瑋柏) is no exception, following up his album Play it Cool last year, comes this compilation album Will’s Future (literally, 未來式 means “past tense”Wink.

Review

Following the controversy over her last album, “Dark Angel“, which was released in February 2006, Hyori Lee has been pretty quiet in the Korean music scene. She released a few singles here and there in the year 2007, namely Anycall and Toc Toc Toc, but fans were unsure about what would happen to their favorite sexy Korean idol. In May 2008, Hyori Lee broke the silence by collaborating with Jung JaeJyung in singing A Cat on the Roof. This digital single strayed from Hyori Lee’s image from previous albums, and allowed fans to see a dramatic change in her. The question on everyone’s mind was, did she change for the better? That question was answered with the release of her third and latest album, It’s Hyorish in July 2008. The album was met with mixed reactions, and it’s really up to the listener to decide if they like it or not.

This year’s Olympics truly is a proud moment for all those of Chinese descent throughout the world, regardless of the political controversies that have surrounded it. Just as sports unite people regardless of political affiliation, background, or creed, music can do so too.

Recently, I figured out how to tune in to HitFM (Taiwan’s premier music radio station) via my Mac, and one of the songs that was played was this - What Kind of Music Makes You Comfortable (是什麼音樂讓你覺得舒服). It has one of the longest names I have ever seen in a Chinese song.
