Review
For many years now, the Japanese hip-hop group m-flo ( which consists of vocalist VERBAL and producer/dj Taku) have worked on a string of projects that involved collaborations with various well-known artists in the Japanese music scene. These included names like Crystal Kay, CHEMISTRY, BoA, etc. These tracks were released in three different albums, under the m-flo loves… series. With the final m-flo loves… album COSMICOLOR released in late March 2007, fans began to wonder what would happen to the group. With the release of their newest cd Award SuperNova - Loves Best-, the band shows their fans that they are still active and working hard in the music scene. The album is a collection of greatest hits from previous m-flo loves… albums.
The album starts off with an introductory track, The Beginning, and moves straight onto Love comes and goes, an upbeat track that grabs the listeners’ attention and brings them into the m-flo sound. Next is the song miss you, one of their more famous songs, and a great song to groove to. Lotta love is next, and it is yet another great track to dance to, with a strong beat that would surely get one off their seats. In between tracks there are some interlude tracks, and serve as a good interval for the album. The next track that screams attention is Loop In My Heart, which has a catchy beat and is true to the hip hop aspect of m-flo. Departing from the hip hop feel given by the album thus far, Cosmic Night Run adds variety to the album by introducing a jazzier feeling. The album also includes the Love Bug, a song featuring Korean superstar BoA, who provides a very steady vocal that makes the song catchy and easy to listen to. Also in the album, the group included Tripod Baby, a collaboration with Lisa, a former band member that left the band for a solo career in 2002. This song led to rumors that Lisa may in fact rejoin the band, but that rumor has not been confirmed yet. That aside, the song flows really well and shows the chemistry that Lisa has with the band, and this reviewer hopes that the rumors do ring true, for Lisa sounds great as part of m-flo. The album also includes a slow song, Let Go, which features YOSHIKA. This song leaves the traditional hip-hop feel of the album, but instead simply uses a piano for background music. Perfect for soothing the soul of a troubled one, YOSHIKA’s vocals blend seamlessly with the piano, making this track pleasing to the ears, and it gives the album a good break from the hip-hop beats. As the album winds down the home stretch, one can appreciate the vocals of Crystal Kay and the beats of Taku in REEWIND!, which to me is a great track to end the entire album with.
This album, in my opinion, is truly a collection of the greatest hits m-flo has amassed over the m-flo loves… project. It brings a suitable close to the project, which spanned from 2003-2008. With the various artists featured in this album, I’m sure everyone would be able to find a song that they can appreciate. I recommend picking up this album if you see it in any music store. Till next time.
