Another couple months, and another Cyndi Wang album comes out. Red Cyndi isn’t a studio album, but rather a compilation of her previous hits along with three new songs, which are featured here. (Also note that I have midterms, so I’m unlikely to be back until middle of next week). For those who like her, 看一看吧.

Hi Hi Bye Bye is one of those poppy, perhaps silly songs - take a look at the music video after the break to get an idea. Furthermore, it incorporates another children’s song into the melody. 因為是你, on the other hand, is a slow, romantic song, while 水仙 has a fair bit of 中國風 in it, with traditional instruments, but with a remixed Cyndi beat.

I’ll be brief, since I’ve already given my thoughts in a previous song review. Basically, I guess that people are pretty much divided into two camps - those who like Cyndi and those who don’t. It seems to be pretty the much the same situation with English music: There are some whose songs are just so repetitive and bad, but they still sell well and earn a bundle of money (ahem, Soulja Boy, ahem). Cyndi Wang, in my opinion, is like that. Her songs for the most part are generic - they pretty much sound all the same. Take all the zhuda 主打 (title songs) from each of her albums and compare them - not too much different at all.

So, for those who do like Cyndi, listen away. If you already like her songs, you can’t really be disappointed now, since it’s basically more of the same.

Cyndi Wang regularly comes out with new albums - in fact, her last one, Magic Cyndi came out in April. So here we go again - Cyndi dons an aviator’s costume (man, the Taiwanese artists are really into costumes… First secret agents, then cowboys, now this) for the new album Fly! Cyndi coming out on November 30. Of course, some would argue that because her songs are so generic, she can afford to come out with new albums every few months. But whatever, I’ll reserve judgment until the 30th.

王心凌, or Cyndi Wang’s彩虹的微笑 (The Rainbow’s Smile) is a song from the popular drama 微笑pasta, or “Smiling Pasta”. 微笑Pasta, which translates into “smiling pasta” (yes that is pasta in English) tells the story of a young girl (played by Cyndi Wang) who coincidentally meets 何群 (He Qun), a super famous and super popular singer. Try as he might,何群 (He Qun), played by 張東梁 (Nicholas Teo) from Malaysia, cannot get rid of Cyndi’s character, 成曉詩 (Cheng Xiao Shi). From playfully texting him from across the room in class to speaking out against the paparazzi, she is constantly at his side. 成曉詩 (Cheng Xiao Shi) helps 何群 (He Qun) learn to live with the past and make up with his rebellious younger brother. At the same time, 何群 (He Qun) helps his girlfriend deal with the problems that come from dating a national superstar and supports her loving family, which runs the Italian (yes, in Taiwan) restaurant微笑 pasta. The restaurant lends its name to the drama and it is indeed a good name; the entire drama is very happy go lucky. 微笑pasta aired during the summer of 2006 and had very very high ratings, especially considering the fact that it aired concurrently with the highly anticipated drama “The Hospital” (featuring F4’s Jerry Yan) in Taiwan. The song 彩虹的微笑 (The Rainbow’s Smile) is also very happy go lucky; Cyndi’s voice is good for a song that can cheer you up on a day that you’re feeling down. I must admit, as an American born Chinese, when I first listened to this song, I was a little put off by the parts of it that were in English. After hearing it several times though, I can think of no better words for it than fun and charming. So give it a couple of listens (it’s on the short side too).

Quite possibly one of Taiwan’s most famous pop princesses, comes out regularly with an album every year (unlike some who take three years… Think Elva Hsiao - 1087.. hehe) This is probably one of the most recent songs from her that has gotten stuck in my head. It’s very upbeat despite it supposing to be a sad song about someone losing their love of their life. The music video is just weird though (but weird in that cute affectionate way, not like the sadistic disgusting style of JJ Lin).
